Detroit Jazz Festival 2017 Keeping with tradition, the Detroit Jazz Festival was held during the Labor Day weekend. This brings the best of the best of all jazz musicians and singers to Detroit every year and all the music is FREE to the public, thanks to numerous corporate and private sponsors. Jazz lovers descend on Detroit from the metro area and all over the country to enjoy this end-of-summer musical extravaganza. This festival has a 40-year history and brings in top jazz musicians from everywhere. This year’s talent included Herbie Hancock and Regina Carter, and artist-in-residence Wayne Shorter, along with a long list of worldwide talent performing at one or the other of the four stages in downtown Detroit and extending to include all of Hart Plaza. There was shopping, food, collectibles, souvenirs and all manner of things for sale throughout the festival venue, including CDs and DVDs from some of the musicians who were performing and local artists who might not be performing, but were trying to get themselves heard. In addition to the festival itself, downtown Detroit has been undergoing a huge rebirth, with lots of businesses, including retail and outstanding restaurants and coffee shops, contributing to the overall festival atmosphere. Detroit Metro Mashup was there to listen to the music, but also to document some of the ongoing activity with photographs. We hope you enjoy them enough to get inspired and come to Detroit during the 2018 Labor Day weekend to enjoy the jazz.
